The Director of the Canadian Parliamentary Budget Office stated that the average cost for each asylum seeker arriving in Canada from a visa-exempt country is $16,500, assuming this cost spreads over three and a half years.
The average waiting time has also become three years due to the large number of applications since the full reopening of the Canadian borders in the fall of 2021.
According to an analysis by the Parliamentary Budget Office, the total cost associated with processing asylum applications for individuals arriving in Canada with an Electronic Travel Authorization before January 1, 2024, who have not received a final decision, has risen to $455 million for the next five years.
It is worth mentioning that the Canadian government provides direct support to asylum seekers through various programs, including the Temporary Housing Assistance Program, the Temporary Federal Health Program, the Legal Assistance Program, in addition to other programs such as the Canadian Social Transfer Program and the Canada-Quebec Agreement.
