A man from Quebec has pleaded guilty to a hit-and-run incident in 2022 in Montreal that resulted in the death of seven-year-old Maria Lejhencoifska, a Ukrainian refugee who fled the Russian-Ukrainian war.
Juan Manuel Becerra Garcia from Longueuil, Quebec, submitted the plea yesterday, Thursday, in Montreal court, and the judge's decision will be issued on June 5.
The tragedy shocked the province, and Lejhencoifska was walking to school with her older brother and sister in the Ville Marie neighborhood of Montreal on December 13, 2022, when she was struck.
The family had only arrived in Canada two months before her death.
Garcia's plea yesterday, Thursday, means he has avoided trial.
