Canada is expected to provide more details about its plan to achieve defense spending goals in an attempt to calm the concerns surrounding the Prime Minister during the NATO summit this week in Washington, D.C.
NATO allies have agreed to spend at least 2% of their GDP on defense, but Canada has not committed to that for a long time.
A senior government official familiar with the talks said Canada will present a timeline to reach the funding target and more information about its plan today, Thursday.
Trudeau is expected to continue pressing allies to provide support for Ukraine, which has become a focal point for NATO support as the war-torn country faces increasing aggression from Russia.
Canada pledged an additional $500 million in military aid to Ukraine during a one-on-one conversation with President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday.
Trudeau will also meet with the new British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and other leaders as the three-day summit concludes today.
