The University of Toronto granted amnesty to the pro-Palestinian protesters as part of an agreement to comply with a court order and vacate the camp on campus.

A spokesperson for the camp confirmed to CP24 on Wednesday night that the organizers submitted the request before complying with a court order to evacuate King's College Circle last week.

Sarah Rasikh said in an email to CP24: "Ensuring the safety of all protesters has always been at the forefront of the Circle of Peoples' concerns."

The camp participants believe that the least the university can do is not to pursue its students for participating in a peaceful protest. This agreement only states that on paper, and we expect them to adhere to it in practice."

Rasikh provided CP24 with a copy of the amnesty agreement, which was signed by camp members and two officials from UofT, including Vice Dean of Students Sandy Welch, on July 3.

Under the agreement, the university will not take any legal or disciplinary action related to the camp or any other pro-Palestinian protests on campus. Additionally, the university will not file complaints regarding students or other faculty members or camp members with the Toronto police due to their participation in the demonstrations.

In exchange for amnesty, camp members agree to vacate by 6 p.m. the deadline and dismantle the camp they set up on the downtown campus on May 2.

The university stated in a statement that it communicated with camp members throughout July 3 before the deadline.

A university spokesperson said on Wednesday evening: "This communication, initiated by student leaders, led to an agreement to ensure a peaceful, organized, and safe exit without police involvement, in line with the university's goal from the beginning."

Rasikh noted that a similar amnesty agreement was included in every offer they presented to the university, and she said that the university had tentatively approved it even before the mandatory order was submitted.

The pro-Palestinian camp at the University of Toronto ended last week after 62 days. Although they may have packed their tents, the organizers said they would continue to push the university to disclose investments in companies benefiting from the ongoing Israeli assault on Gaza and to divest from them.
