Pro-Palestinian demonstrators decided to end the sit-in at the University of Ottawa's campus after a 10-week protest demanding the university cut financial ties with Israel.

The groups "Labor for Palestine Ottawa" and "Occupation of Tabarit" issued a statement yesterday, Wednesday, stating that students "chose to clear the camp in Tabarit Park".

Sumaya Khairuddin, a student leader in the "Occupy Tabarit" movement, said in a statement: "We have reached an impasse in negotiations as a direct result of the university's claim that it has no authority to do anything regarding the funds it manages, when in fact it has complete control over them."

At best, this university and its president are out of touch with reality. At worst, they are simply ruthless, driven only by greed and insulated from the suffering of others."

On Wednesday morning, protest signs and wooden barriers remained in front of Tabarit Hall, along with some tents.

The student group began its demonstration in the park outside Tabarit Hall at the end of April, demanding Ottawa sever financial ties with Israel. Over the weekend, demonstrators moved their camp closer to Tabarit Hall and set up plywood barriers around the tents.

Organizers met with officials from the University of Ottawa.

In an Instagram statement dated July 5, the Ottawa branch of the Palestinian Youth Movement said Ottawa officials "set the tone of the meeting by refusing to discuss any of the camp's demands".

The university has remained silent on the camp since the demonstrators began setting up tents in early May. The university did not respond to multiple requests from CTV News for comment on the status of negotiations with the demonstrators.

The Ottawa camp was part of a wave of similar protests across Canada condemning the Israeli attack on Gaza following the Hamas attack on October 7.

In a video, Insaaf Ottawa stated: "From the beginning of negotiations with the university administration, we came to the table with an open mind, proposing various ways to meet our demands, ranging from minor changes to simply acknowledging anti-Palestinian racism." on Instagram.

The university responded by stalling, speaking to us in bureaucratic language, and rejecting our completely reasonable demands."

Last week, pro-Palestinian demonstrators ended their sit-in at the University of Toronto after an Ontario judge ordered the group to vacate the property. Protests also ended at McGill University, the University of British Columbia, and Western University. Protesters plan to end the camp at the University of Guelph next week.
