A 6.4 magnitude earthquake was recorded off the coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia this morning, Thursday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Initially, the U.S. Geological Survey reported that the earthquake's strength was 6.6, but this was later downgraded to 6.4, while the Canadian seismic agency recorded its strength at 6.1, about 183 kilometers southwest of Port Alice.

The earthquake, which occurred about 209 kilometers from Tofino, was recorded shortly after 8 a.m. According to emergency information in British Columbia, there is no tsunami threat on the west coast.

Last week, a series of earthquakes were recorded off the west coast of Vancouver Island, with varying magnitudes reaching up to 5.7 recorded on July 4. All these tremors clustered in an area about 150 to 250 kilometers from the west coast of Vancouver Island, Tofino.

Andrew Schaefer, a seismologist at the Canadian Geological Survey, said last week that despite the increase in seismic activity, the earthquakes were "behaving as usual" in the area.

He added in a statement sent via email to CTV News: "These quakes are scattered on the hills, where their historical strength is around 6, with 4 to 5 seconds of relatively common duration."

"Given the type of earthquakes, they typically do not produce any kind of tsunami, and we do not expect them to be felt, let alone cause damage, on Vancouver Island."
