Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly announced that Canada and Ukraine are in the final stages of reaching an agreement on the country's security "guarantees."
Joly said—in a statement from Ukraine in an interview broadcast by the Canadian network "CBC News" on Sunday—that the agreement would be a historic moment for Ukraine; similar agreements are expected to be concluded with other G7 countries.
Canada has already sent a draft proposal for guarantees to Kyiv, and Joly said she was in Ukraine to help finalize the agreement. Last year, the G7 promised to conclude agreements that include commitments to provide military support and training to Ukraine, but the details of the Canadian proposal are not yet clear.
Joly added, to CBC News chief political correspondent Rosemary Barton: "I am here to push for reaching the finish line, and I believe we can complete it in the coming weeks."
Joly had visited Ukraine to meet with key officials and tour some areas bombed by Russia.
Ukraine continues to push for more international support in the form of funding and weapons, as well as long-term security commitments and eventual membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), amid ongoing advances by Russian forces in Ukraine.
