Canada is seeking to better manage the amount of plastic produced in the country by requiring manufacturers to submit annual reports on what they produce.
Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault announced the national plastic registry the day before negotiations began on a global treaty to end plastic waste in Ottawa.
Guilbeault is a key player in talks aimed at establishing an international agreement to eliminate plastic waste by 2040.
Canadians dispose of over four million tons of plastic each year, with less than one-tenth of it actually being recycled.
The registry will initially apply to manufacturers of plastic packaging, electronics, and single-use plastic products, with plans to expand in subsequent years to include resin, tire, and agricultural product producers.
They will be required to report each year on the amount of plastic they produce and where these products end up.
