General Motors said on Monday that it will lay off more than 1,000 employees in its software and services units worldwide.
General Motors confirmed the layoffs reported by CNBC in a statement, saying, "As we build the future of General Motors, we must streamline for speed and excellence, make bold choices, and prioritize investments that will have the greatest impact."
CNBC reported that the job cuts include nearly 600 positions at General Motors' technology campus near Detroit. General Motors, which stated that about half of the cuts are in the U.S., said the reductions were not due to cost-cutting but came after a review of operations following the departure of Mike Abbott, the executive vice president of software and services in March, who left for health reasons.
Abbott, a former Apple executive, was appointed in 2023 to lead GM's software development efforts amid increased investment by the automaker in electric vehicles and subscription-based services.
In April 2023, General Motors said that about 5,000 of its salaried workers received buyouts as it worked toward a goal of cutting costs by $2 billion after reducing hundreds of executive and salaried positions in February 2023.
