British Foreign Secretary David Cameron announced new funding to address the reproductive healthcare crisis in the Gaza Strip amounting to £4.25 million.

According to a statement published on the official UK government website today, Sunday, the British aid will ensure the ability of the UN Population Fund to provide life-saving support to vulnerable women and girls.

This support is expected to reach about 111,500 women, or about 1 in every 5 adult women in Gaza, and will support up to 100 community midwives, as well as distribute 45,000 clean delivery kits.

Cameron affirmed that this additional funding is in response to the UN's urgent appeal for the occupied Palestinian territories, saying, "Women are bearing the brunt of the desperate humanitarian situation in Gaza today, with several thousand women currently pregnant and worried about delivering their babies safely."

He added: "This new British funding will help make childbirth safer and improve the lives of mothers and their newborn babies," and continued: "We need to see an immediate ceasefire so that we can secure the safe release of hostages, get more aid, and allow organizations like the United Nations Population Fund to effectively carry out their vital work."
