Rescue services said a man hit pedestrians with his car in a popular shopping area in Berlin on Wednesday, killing at least one person and injuring eight others.
Police spokesman Thilo Cablitz said the man hit people at a street corner around 10:30 AM before backing the car onto the road and then crashing into a store window around the next building.
Fire service spokesman Stefan Salzweidel said the number of injured was eight. Police said more than ten were injured, many of them seriously.
Cablitz said the driver was apparently arrested by passersby before being quickly detained by a police officer who was near the scene. The police are also trying to determine whether he hit the pedestrians intentionally or if it was an accident.
He added that he had no further information about the man who was driving the car or whether he has told the police anything so far. The incident occurred at one end of the Kurfuerstendamm shopping street next to Breitscheidplatz square, where an extremist carried out a car attack on a Christmas market in 2016, killing 13 people.
