The Waterloo Region roadmap has been updated towards a population of nearly one million people.
The council approved changes to its official plan at a meeting held Thursday night to be ready to increase the population to 923,000 in the next three decades.
The plan governs aspects such as development, land use, transit, and green space and aims to accommodate 121,000 homes and 168,000 jobs.
Catherine McGarry, Mayor of Cambridge, said, "Now it is really up to us to balance what we hear and try to correct it as much as possible to continue planning for the future for 2051."
The plan is to create denser population centers where people have more immediate local services to help reduce the region's carbon footprint.
Once the council ratifies the Thursday night vote, the updated plan will be sent to the province for final approval.
