The French website la dépêche mentioned that an Algerian family received 80 thousand euros in social assistance from France over six years, or about 1100 euros per month, through methods in which they defrauded the French welfare systems.
According to the French site, the fraudulent head of the family made regular trips back and forth to France, while he and his family were supposed to reside in France to receive these benefits.
The site pointed out that the amount was obtained by a family living in Algeria without having the right to do so, by receiving the "active solidarity income" RSA and assistance from the "family allowance fund" CAF, a social benefit established by France to supplement the resources of low-income individuals. To benefit from it, each beneficiary must meet certain residency criteria in France.
Due to this fraud resulting from social benefits, the couple was tried before the Avignon court on Tuesday. The couple and their four children live in Algeria, and the father regularly traveled between Avignon and Algeria.
In such cases, criminal prosecutions are rare, as a repayment schedule is generally arranged.
Deputy Attorney General Pierre Cramier said, "If this case is brought to court, it is due to the size, amount, and duration of the fraud... Dishonesty is what weakens the system."
During the investigation, the father said: "I had no choice, I was sick," and the mother said: "I did not know it was this serious, I did it for my children."
The prosecution demanded the recovery of the amounts and a sentence of 3 to 4 months suspended imprisonment, while the final judgment will be issued on March 15.
