Diplomatic sources told AFP on Wednesday that the session supposed to be held by the UN Security Council on Thursday to vote on granting the State of Palestine full membership in the United Nations may be postponed to Friday to allow for further discussions.
Many diplomatic sources had informed AFP on Tuesday that the council would vote on Thursday on the request submitted by the Palestinian Authority for full UN membership, but this date is no longer certain after some members called for delaying the session until Friday.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the date of the session had not been confirmed, according to multiple diplomatic sources.
The Axios website reported that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas rejected a request from the United States to postpone the vote on Palestine's UN membership.
Samoel Zbogar, Slovenia's ambassador to the United Nations, told several journalists on Wednesday afternoon that "the matter is still pending" on whether the session will be held on Thursday or Friday.
In contrast, the Palestinian ambassador to the international organization, Riyad Mansour, stated that "the vote will take place tomorrow at three in the afternoon. I am sure of that. If you don't believe me, you will see tomorrow."
However, the Maltese diplomatic mission, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council for the month of April, has not confirmed this date nor denied it.
Regardless of the date of the session, the outcome of the vote seems predetermined in light of the United States' opposition to the draft resolution submitted by Algeria, which "recommends that the General Assembly accept the State of Palestine as a member of the United Nations."
Amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian Authority called on the Security Council in early April to reconsider the request it submitted in 2011 for full UN membership.
