Toronto holds a special place in Hugh Jackman's heart.
The Australian actor said during an exclusive interview with Etalk in front of dozens of fans gathered in the parking lot at 299 Queen Street West on Tuesday that the city is where his journey to Wolverine began.
Jackman added, "Let me tell you a true story. We came this morning, and I was driving here on this highway. What is this highway? (someone in the audience shouts, 'Gardiner'), 'I got flowers with the words, I was looking at them, and I just remembered that I came here in October 1999 for the Wolverine audition in Toronto, 25 years ago.'
The Australian actor, along with Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds and Canadian director Shawn Levy, was in Toronto on Tuesday to promote their film Deadpool & Wolverine, which is set to hit theaters next Friday.
Reynolds, who plays Deadpool, expressed his excitement for the film, saying it will be the first time the two characters enter the Marvel cinematic universe.
He said, "We also have two superheroes born in Canada. That's a strange thing, you know." According to Marvel, Wolverine is from Alberta, while Deadpool is from "an undisclosed location" in Canada.
During the interview, Reynolds was also asked about his friendship with Jackman, describing their relationship as that of "two old ladies watching the sunset."
Reynolds said, "The key thing in any friendship or partnership, whether it can be a friend or a spouse, or anything else, is to encourage the other person."
He added, "I remember at the end of my first day, he came to ask me how things went, and I didn't know him. He was a big star, and I was playing a supporting role, and I said, 'I hope I can come back and shoot this scene again.' I didn't like it, but we all are fine, and we will move on."
Reynolds continued, "This guy lit up all the lights and asked everyone to go back to their trailers and come back to the set, and we shot it again, and that's what's in the movie."
"I remember thinking, if I'm lucky enough to be in that guy's position, that's the kind I would like to be if I'm lucky enough to have that. So that was my first impression of Jackman," he added before joking, "It tends to descend from there, but mostly it tends to be higher."
The Etalk special hosted by Tyrone Edwards will air on CTV Wednesday evening and will later be available on Crave.
Later in the evening, the trio attended the Canadian premiere of the film at the ScotiaBank Theater and met fans, some of whom had traveled from London, Ontario, who had been waiting since that morning.
Speaking to CP24 on the red carpet, Reynolds said it is "essential" for the film to also have a premiere in Canada.
He added, "Of course, we are coming to Canada. It’s my mother ship, and this movie and this character, Canada is my other mother ship, so it’s impossible to miss it." Reynolds, one of the writers and producers of the film, has been portraying the current version of Deadpool since 2016.
The actor described the story of Deadpool as "one of the greatest things I loved in my life."
He said, "The character of Deadpool is always more of a character than just a scene, and the character is the thing I think you remember most of all." "All the surprises in the movie are built on the characters." In a separate interview on the red carpet with CTV News Toronto, Reynolds said making the film was a dream come true.
Meanwhile, Jackman praised his co-star in the film, saying that Reynolds has an amazing work ethic and that he is "generous" as a writer, producer, and actor in the film.
Jackman said, "You should be very proud of him, and I hope you are as proud of this film as we are."
The Australian actor, who has played the mutant for more than two decades, is excited to see him in the iconic blue and yellow Wolverine suit.
Jackman said, "I'm losing my mind. I can't believe I haven't worn the yellow and blue for 24 years," explaining that Reynolds told him when he agreed to do the film that Wolverine would be wearing the yellow and blue outfit.
"Once I put it on, everything made sense. And now I'm actually sleeping with the suit."
Reynolds jokingly said he asked Jackman to steal the suit after the film. The Australian actor replied, "And I did."
He recalled meeting the Australian actor for the first time while filming X-Men Origins: Wolverine in 2008 and saw how Jackman treated everyone on set with dignity, grace, and kindness.
