The Venezuelan authorities announced the arrest of 32 people, both civilians and military personnel, on charges of treason and their involvement in five assassination plots against President Nicolás Maduro.
Venezuelan Attorney General Tarek William Saab said, "All detainees confessed and revealed information about the plans targeting the Venezuelan people and the democratic society."
He explained that arrest warrants have been issued against 11 other individuals, including human rights activists, journalists, and exiled military personnel, indicating that the plots targeted not only Maduro but also Defense Minister General Vladimir Padrino.
Maduro had mentioned these plots last week in his annual State of the Nation address but did not go into details.
Commenting on these arrests, Maduro said in his television program, "The maximum penalty must be imposed on terrorism, conspiracy, and treason against the homeland."
