The government of the New Democratic Party in the province of Manitoba in the central west of the country announced until the end of next September the extension of the tax exemption on gasoline prices in the province, which was implemented at the beginning of this year.

A government spokesperson confirmed in press statements that the province will continue to suspend the fuel tax for a period exceeding by three months the initially announced period.

It is noteworthy that the gasoline price reduction of 14 cents per liter in the province of Manitoba was supposed to remain effective for only six months, that is between January 1 and the end of June.

The government had stated when announcing the suspension of the fuel tax that it took this measure to help drivers deal with inflation.

Last month, the head of government, leader of the New Democratic Party in Manitoba, Wab Kinew, said that fuel prices in the province are the lowest in the country.

He also confirmed that the tax on gasoline prices will never be as high as it was under the Progressive Conservative government.

It is noted that this tax brings in about 340 million dollars annually for the province.

It is worth mentioning that in the last local elections in Manitoba, held on October 3, 2023, the New Democratic Party won to return to power after seven and a half years spent in official opposition.

It was the first time that a leader from the First Nations, Wab Kinew, won. This is a precedent at both the provincial and federal levels.
