A committee affiliated with the Vancouver Council voted in favor of continuing to assist four major Indigenous regions to win the bid to host the 2030 Winter Olympic Games.
The vote came despite concerns raised in the task force report regarding finances and the tight timeline to submit the file to the International Olympic Committee by next February.
The leaders of the four major Indigenous host regions, Squamish, Lil'wat, Tsleil-Waututh, and Musqueam, appeared before the standing committee meeting on Wednesday, saying that supporting the Indigenous-led effort represents an opportunity to work on the government's commitments to reconciliation.
"The city council and the mayor listened to our concerns about how this will happen," said Musqueam Indian Band Chief Wayne Sparrow. "So at the end of the day, we were all very satisfied with the outcome of this decision."
Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart said after the vote that the council made a very important decision to continue working with the host nations.
Stewart says the next steps are to make the federal and provincial governments partners and then sign a multilateral agreement to form the basis of any bid.
The Canadian Olympic Committee said the bid still needs approval from the federal government and provincial governments before finalizing it next February. The games are expected to be awarded in late May or early June of next year.
