A recent report issued by CBC indicates that securing the safety of Canadian parliament members has reached record costs.

The report also pointed out that over nine months from the beginning of the fiscal year 2023-2024, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police spent 2.5 million dollars, which represents about double the cost they incurred in the previous year.

It is expected that the security costs for the members during the next fiscal year will reach about 3.4 million dollars, which is double the previous year's cost, if the current spending pace continues.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police had spent 1.8 million dollars to secure the parliament members during the fiscal year 2022-2023, and these figures do not include the security costs for Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Despite these high costs, they are still a small part of the more than 30 million dollars annually spent on protecting Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his family over the past two fiscal years.

Regarding this matter, former Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino stated that the rise in these costs indicates changes in the strength of threats since the time of the pandemic, as well as since the Freedom Convoy protests.

Meanwhile, Pierre Yves Bourduas, former Deputy Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, stated that the conditions we faced, whether related to the pandemic or some other policies, contributed to creating an unstable environment, and it is likely that the Canadian police have more movement and presence now.

Bourduas added that the Mounted Police have taken several steps to improve protection and reduce costs; however, they had to approve some increases in costs, including a recent 23.7% increase in officers' salaries.
