The UN special rapporteur on Palestine, Francesca Albanese, condemned on Tuesday the defense by German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock of Israel's bombing of places where Palestinian civilians are displaced in Gaza, warning of the legal ramifications of supporting a state that commits international crimes.
This came in a post by the rapporteur on the "X" platform, in response to statements made by the German Foreign Minister, which legitimize Israeli attacks targeting places where Palestinian civilians take refuge.
The rapporteur expressed her concern about Germany's stance towards Israel and Palestine and its "serious consequences."
Albanese stated in her post, "Minister Baerbock should be called upon to provide evidence regarding the claims she makes, and the loss of protection status for civilian areas reflects Israel's actions in Gaza and elsewhere."
She emphasized, saying, "She must explain how she legitimized the massacres."
Albanese added, "If Germany decides to stand by a state that commits international crimes, that is a political choice, but it also has legal consequences, and where politics has grotesquely failed, let justice prevail."
Baerbock's remarks during the session held in the German Federal Assembly on October 10, marking the anniversary of the Israeli attacks that began on October 7, 2023, on the Gaza Strip, received widespread reactions.
The German minister stated in the session, "Self-defense means, of course, destroying terrorists, not just attacking them," claiming that "Hamas hides among civilian gatherings and schools."
She added, "That's why I made it clear to the United Nations that civilian areas may also lose their protected status due to misuse by terrorists."
