Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pledged to remain in his position as head of government in an interview with Radio Canada on Friday despite what he described as the personal challenges that come with the position.
Trudeau told radio broadcaster Alec Castonguay during a lively segment of the "Midi info" program that he thinks every day about quitting his "crazy" and "very difficult" and sometimes "boring" job.
But Trudeau said that the major domestic and international challenges motivate him to stay in office and face the next federal election scheduled for next year.
Women’s rights, 2SLGBTQ+ rights, and progress in combating climate change are among the issues Trudeau claimed are currently at risk in Canada, pointing to global attacks on democracies through what he called extreme populism.
He insisted that Canadians will have to make fundamental choices in the next election about the kind of country they want to have.
He said he works in politics to serve, not to gain popularity, and he is convinced that he has something to offer as Prime Minister.
Trudeau said during the interview in French: "I cannot be the man I am and give up fighting at this moment."
"If I didn’t doubt what I do almost every day, I wouldn’t be human."
