An infant in Toronto was admitted to the hospital after contracting measles.

The Toronto Public Health Authority confirmed in a press release today, Friday, that it is investigating a confirmed case of measles linked to travel.

Few details about the case have been disclosed, but officials say the infant is receiving treatment in the hospital.

Earlier this week, another child who recently traveled abroad was confirmed to have measles, and both TPH and Peel Public Health said they are contacting known contacts of the two children.

Measles is highly contagious and its symptoms include red rash, fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and fatigue.

The viral infection spreads through the air and close contact, and symptoms can start to appear anywhere from seven to 21 days after exposure.

According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, as of February 3, there are three active cases of measles in the country.

In 2023, there were 12 confirmed cases of measles in Canada.

TPH warns of decreased vaccination coverage rates among school-age children due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and encourages parents to ensure their children are up to date.

Officials say vaccinations are highly effective in preventing the spread of measles.
