The Toronto Transit Commission announced support for bus, streetcar, and subway services at the beginning of September.

The Toronto Transit Commission is focused on providing services and increasing service levels on bus, subway, and streetcar networks, at the same times as before, starting in early September, to encourage more people in the city to return to public transit after a noticeable decline in ridership during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow announced this at a press conference, alongside the CEO of the Toronto Transit Commission, Rick Leary.

On another note, the Toronto Transit Commission stated that these developments will lead to a total service hours of 97% compared to the rates during the peak of the pandemic; service levels were at 91% before the pandemic.

Chow added to reporters during the press conference that congestion in Toronto is a real problem and encouraged those who can use public transit or are considering it to not hesitate and to embrace using the Toronto Transit Commission services; as it is the best way.

Chow said that these new service developments will start with the beginning of the new school year, as well as more people returning to work in the office.

She noted that customers on 16 bus routes will have more space on buses or shorter wait times, while 23 routes will see improvements in service.

On another hand, the Toronto public transit agency stated that it is considering restoring more than 100 additional scheduled bus trips and making route adjustments to facilitate student pickup at multiple locations around schools.
