U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken reiterated his country's support for the ousted Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum after previously confirming that there is no solution to the coup that took place in Niger two weeks ago except through diplomacy.
He also pointed out that the safety and security of Bazoum and his family is essential, according to a statement published by the U.S. State Department on Wednesday, August 9, 2023.
The State Department also clarified that Blinken discussed over the phone with Bazoum the visit of Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland to Niger and her meeting with several military council officials last Monday.
The State Department affirmed that support continues for a solution that returns Niger to the path of democracy and constitutional order.
