The head of the Libyan government, appointed by the parliament, Osama Hamad, stated on Monday evening that the number of victims of the storm "Daniel" in Derna exceeds 2000, noting that the missing are in the thousands.
Osama Hamad added that entire neighborhoods have vanished into the sea along with thousands of their residents.
Earlier, the government appointed by the House of Representatives announced that Derna has become a disaster-stricken city.
Additionally, the head of the General Authority for National Safety in Derna, Fathi al-Kreimi, announced that the situation in Derna is catastrophic after the collapse of two dams in Wadi Derna, confirming in a statement today, Monday, September 11, 2023, to the Libyan News Agency that the authority has recovered hundreds of victims and injuries and rescued many trapped individuals.
He stated that water has engulfed residential buildings and that the situation in Derna is now out of control.
He also pointed out that the area next to the valley has entirely washed away into the sea.
For his part, the head of the National Unity Government, Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, declared three days of mourning for the souls of the victims of the floods and inundations caused by Hurricane Daniel in the eastern region.
