The city is entering the final stages of resuming water service through the repaired main supply network, as water consumption continues to decline below the city's threshold level.
The city announced on Sunday afternoon that the water quality test results "meet and exceed" water quality standards, giving the city the green light to move to the final phase of restoring service stability.
François Bouchart, Director of Priorities and Infrastructure, stated in a press release: "Stabilization is a complex process that not only focuses on the repaired sections of the pipes, but means we must stabilize the entire water network in Calgary," "This step carries the highest risk, and we have contingency plans to ensure we can respond quickly if necessary."
No Concerns
In her early update on Sunday, Mayor Jyoti Gondek stated that the cleaning of the pipes does not raise any concerns.
This means that water crews will slowly operate the pumps and valves to restore the water lines.
Gondek said, "This is the most dangerous step in this process," comparing it to someone trying to test a weak part of their body after recovering from surgery.
Water Consumption Declining Again
She noted that water consumption continued to decline on Saturday, dropping to 447 million liters, which is well below the city's threshold of 480 million liters – although it probably didn't help that many residents outside the city are enjoying the long weekend for Canada Day.
She urged residents to continue conserving water.
Additionally, "If you have to play air guitar while showering, there are many perfect three-minute songs in the first Clash album."
Gondek stated that the river path next to Point McKay has been reopened, and that once the water returns, some fire hydrants can be used to flush out the water, which is normal. The first community where this may happen is Parkdale.
The next update is scheduled for 8:30 AM on Canada Day.
