The Doug Ford government will "review" its intention to appoint facilitators to assess some regional governments in Southern Ontario.
The news was announced in a statement released by the new Minister of Housing, Paul Calandra, on platform X (formerly known as Twitter) this morning, Monday.
The former Minister of Housing, Steve Clark, had previously committed to naming these facilitators this week.
Calandra stated on social media, “Our government is working diligently to ensure that municipalities are properly equipped to achieve their housing goals and bury shovels in the ground.”
"As such, I will review the previously announced intention to appoint facilitators to evaluate the regional governments in Durham, Halton, Niagara, Simcoe County, Waterloo, and York to ensure that the province’s approach supports our goal of building more homes in these rapidly growing areas."
The review will not affect Peel Region, which has already been dissolved and is transitioning to become three single-tier cities, and the region is separate from the facilitators working in land development.
Very little information is available about what this review will entail or what the concerns may be, but Calandra promised in his statement to release more details by the end of the month.
It has been just under a year since the province announced it would appoint facilitators to assess regional governments.
The goal at that time was to identify the best ways to divide governance responsibilities between upper and lower-tier municipalities in an attempt to build housing.
The Ford government has made a number of changes in the name of reaching its goal of building 1.5 million homes over 10 years, including strong powers for mayors, appointing regional chairs, and developing part of the greenbelt.
