An ice climber died after an avalanche in Kananaskis County on Saturday afternoon.

According to Avalanche Canada, two ice climbers in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park were caught in an avalanche at Ranger Creek.

It was reported that the climbers had started descending on foot from the Lone Ranger ice climbing base when a wind-driven avalanche from above struck them, sweeping the victim into a gully on the slope below.

Avalanche Canada added that one person was partially buried and was able to dig themselves out. The other climber was fully buried and died.

Police also confirmed on Sunday that rescue workers found the 26-year-old woman on Saturday, but did not find the 29-year-old man she was climbing with.

His body was recovered on Sunday and transported to the Chief Medical Examiner's office, where police said the victim was from Squamish, British Columbia.

Avalanche Canada said that the wind-driven avalanches were one of several snow avalanches that occurred in the area on Saturday, warning of the potential for similar events on Monday afternoon.
