The Jordanian army announced today, Monday, the downing of a drone loaded with narcotic substances coming from Syrian territory.

The General Command of the Jordanian Armed Forces stated in a statement: "Border Guard forces, in coordination with the Anti-Drug Administration and military security agencies, monitored an attempt by a drone to unlawfully cross the border from Syrian territory into Jordanian territory," according to Reuters.

The statement added: "It (the drone) was downed within Jordanian territory, and confirmed that the aircraft was loaded with a quantity of the narcotic substance crystal."

Earlier last month, the Jordanian army announced that it had thwarted an attempt to smuggle drugs that were carried by a drone coming from Syrian territory to Jordanian territory.

The Jordanian official news agency (Petra) quoted a source in the Jordanian army command (who was not named), saying: "Through surveillance and follow-up, the drone was controlled and downed, and it was found to be carrying a quantity of the narcotic substance crystal."

On July 24, the Jordanian army also downed a drone that was loaded with drugs coming from Syria.

Later that same day, officials from the army and intelligence in Jordan and Syria met to discuss combating the growing drug trade across the common border, according to the French press agency.

The Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a statement that the talks were chaired by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Major General Yousef Al-Hunaiti, and the Director of General Intelligence, Major General Ahmed Husni from the Jordanian side, and the Minister of Defense Ali Mahmoud Abbas and the Director of General Intelligence, Major General Hussam Louka from the Syrian side.

The statement added: "The meeting discussed cooperation in facing the drug threat and its production sources and smuggling, and the entities that organize, manage, and execute smuggling operations across the border into Jordan, as well as the necessary measures to combat smuggling operations and confront this escalating threat to the entire region."
