At least 13 people were killed and 50 others were injured on the evening of Sunday, October 29, 2023, in a collision between two trains in southeastern India, according to a toll issued by local authorities.

The accident occurred between the cities of Alamanda and Kantakapalle in the state of Andhra Pradesh, after a passenger train passed a signal. The Indian Railways Ministry attributed the accident to "human error," according to preliminary investigation findings.

For his part, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned on "X" that he contacted the Railway Minister and offered "his condolences to the families of the victims, hoping for a speedy recovery for the injured."

India has one of the largest railway networks in the world and has witnessed many disasters over the years. The worst of these accidents was in 1981 when a train derailed while crossing a bridge in Bihar and fell into the river, resulting in the deaths of 800 to 1,000 people.

In June, a collision involving three trains near the town of Balasore in the state of Odisha in eastern India resulted in the deaths of about 300 people and injuries to more than a thousand, due to a failure in the switching system.

Also in August, at least 9 people died in southern India when a fire broke out in a train carriage, caused by a passenger heating water to prepare tea.
