Italian President Sergio Mattarella confirmed on Thursday, September 21, 2023, the need for European solutions to the issue of illegal immigration, as no country can resolve this issue alone, according to the Italian news agency Nova.
Mattarella's statements came at the end of the visit of the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, to Italy, where he emphasized that to manage the phenomenon of migration, "we need new and courageous solutions, not superficial or approximate ones. European solutions are required because no country can address the problem alone. We need to carefully explore new solutions."
He also pointed out that "the Dublin rules date back to prehistoric times. Regulating the phenomenon by referring to those agreements means tying Europe to horse-drawn carriages."
According to Mattarella, during the bilateral meeting, "there was complete harmony in assessing the phenomenon of migration, which also affects Germany, and we have the perception that it is a global phenomenon that must be explored in depth with a forward-looking vision, not with short-term or temporary interventions. We need to address this issue by looking to the future, with a new perspective."
