The European Union expressed today its condemnation of the decision issued by the Israeli Knesset, which opposes the establishment of a Palestinian state.
Josep Borrell, the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Union, stated in a statement that there is a consensus in the international community that the only sustainable solution that will achieve peace and security in the Middle East is the two-state solution.
The statement reaffirmed the European Union's firm commitment to lasting and sustainable peace, in accordance with the relevant resolutions issued by the United Nations Security Council, including resolutions 2735, 2728, 2720, and 2712, based on the two-state solution for the Palestinians and Israelis, adding that in line with its long-standing common position and the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council, the European Union will not recognize changes to the 1967 borders unless both parties agree to that.
Borrell emphasized that the European Union will continue to actively work with international and regional partners to revive the political process to achieve this goal, stressing that a reliable path to the establishment of a Palestinian state is a crucial element in that political process, warning that the absence of hope and no prospect for the Palestinian people will only deepen the conflict.
