Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, commented on the death of the Hamas political bureau chief, Yahya Sinwar, on Friday, and its impact on the ongoing war in Gaza since early October 2023.
Trump said that the death of Sinwar will make the prospects for peace easier in the Gaza Strip.
The former president also mentioned during comments to reporters upon his arrival in Detroit that he intends to speak with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Trump added while discussing the potential for peace in Gaza after Sinwar's death, "I think that makes things easier."
For his part, U.S. President Joe Biden considered that there is the possibility to work on a ceasefire in Lebanon, but it will be more difficult in Gaza.
The Israeli government rejected several attempts from its main ally, the United States, to mediate a ceasefire in both Gaza and Lebanon.
Sinwar is regarded as the mastermind behind the October 7, 2023, attack launched by Hamas on southern Israel, which Israeli authorities say resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people.
Health authorities in the Gaza Strip report that the ongoing Israeli military campaign has so far resulted in the deaths of more than 42,000 Palestinians.
The Israeli campaign has caused the displacement of most of Gaza's population of 2.3 million, injured tens of thousands, and led to famine and the destruction of hospitals and schools.
Israel is conducting an intensive assault on Lebanon, resulting in the deaths of more than 2,000 people and the displacement of 1.2 million, targeting the Hezbollah group, which began launching rockets at Israel in support of its ally Hamas on October 8 of last year.
Israel has so far killed a number of senior Hamas leaders and has managed, within weeks, to assassinate leaders of Hezbollah, primarily through airstrikes.
