Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf confirmed that Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's initiative to resolve the crisis in Niger includes six main axes, one of which is to set a timeframe of six months to formulate and achieve a political solution that ensures a return to constitutional and democratic order in Niger.
This came during the press conference he held with local and international media on Tuesday in Algiers, regarding developments in the African Sahel region, particularly Niger.
He explained that the first axis of the initiative includes reinforcing the principle of illegitimacy of unconstitutional changes, noting that Algeria will take the initiative during the next African Union summit to present proposals aimed at strengthening this principle and the mechanisms for its realization and establishment in reality to put an end to the era of coups that has long jeopardized the stability of many countries on the continent and hindered development and progress.
He added that the second axis includes setting a six-month timeframe to formulate and achieve a political solution that guarantees a return to the constitutional and democratic order in Niger through the resumption of political work within the framework of the rule of law.
The third axis also includes political arrangements to exit the crisis, with the aim of formulating political arrangements with the participation and agreement of all parties in Niger without excluding any side, regardless of who they are, provided that the duration of these arrangements does not exceed six months as previously mentioned, and that they are supervised by a civilian authority led by a consensus figure who is accepted by all segments of the political class in Niger and leads to the restoration of constitutional order in the country.
The fourth axis of the initiative includes the guarantees that will ensure the proposed political approach by Algeria provides sufficient guarantees for all parties to ensure the sustainability of the political solution and its acceptance by all actors in the crisis and in its resolution path.
The fifth axis states the participatory approach, meaning that in order to regulate these political arrangements, Algeria will undertake intensive communications and consultations with all concerned parties that can contribute to and assist in politically resolving the crisis or support efforts aimed at that. These communications will take place in three directions: internally with all concerned and active parties in Niger, regionally with neighboring countries and the member countries of the Economic Community of West African States, especially Nigeria as the current president of the group, and internationally with countries that wish to support efforts aimed at finding a peaceful solution to the crisis.
The sixth and final axis includes organizing an international conference on development in the Sahel, where Algeria will seek to organize an international conference on development in the Sahel, aiming to encourage a developmental approach and mobilize the necessary funding to implement developmental programs in this region, which is in dire need of social and economic infrastructure, ensuring stability and security sustainably.
