The story began after a foreign tourist posted on her Instagram account a video showing a crowd of young men near the pyramids chasing two female tourists.

After confirming that the pyramids are a very beautiful archaeological site worth visiting, she pointed out that it is dangerous and uncomfortable at the same time. She noted that she was with her friend visiting an archaeological museum, but they were harassed throughout the trip, and she added that even children tried to steal from them.

This video sparked the anger of many Egyptians who reposted it, demanding the cessation of these behaviors that harm the country and the image of the Egyptian people, as well as hurting tourism and Egypt’s image worldwide.

After this incident, the police announced that they would take the necessary measures to prevent the recurrence of these practices, and they confirmed on their part that Egypt opens its doors to visitors from all countries of the world and is responsible for ensuring the safety of citizens and tourists in general.

Harassment is a widespread phenomenon in some Egyptian areas, but the legislative authorities have enacted strict laws to punish harassers. In the summer of last year, the parliament approved amendments to Law No. 141 of 2021, concerning penalties for sexual harassment.

The act was thus classified not only as a misdemeanor but also as a felony, punishing the accused with imprisonment from two to four years, a fine ranging from 100,000 to 200,000 pounds, or severe imprisonment from 5 to 15 years in extreme cases.
