Health Minister Sylvia Jones said on Wednesday that Ontario will announce a "health system stabilization and recovery" plan this week, revealing that one part will be to expand a program that allows paramedics to avoid transporting patients to the emergency room on every call.
The minister made her remarks in a speech delivered at the Ontario Municipal Association conference in Ottawa, where a nursing staff shortage has led to emergency department closures across the province for hours or days at a time throughout the summer.
Jones said in her speech that there are no easy solutions, but "bold and innovative" steps are required to improve patient care.
She said, "We can no longer stand idly by and support the status quo that cannot respond to the current challenges facing the sector."
"Rather, based on the best evidence and the successes of other states, our government will take bold actions that prioritize patients and their health care above all else."
The first phase of the paramedics' pilot project was launched in 2020 with programs in more than 40 municipalities allowing paramedics to transport patients to somewhere other than the emergency room.
