Two security sources told Reuters that a fire broke out in a church in Giza Governorate in the Imbaba area in Egypt on Sunday morning, killing at least 41 people and injuring 14.
According to what was confirmed by Egyptian media, a number of detectives from the Giza Security Directorate moved to the scene of the fire to conduct investigations and determine its cause, in addition to hearing the testimonies of eyewitnesses and church workers.
Ambulances transported the injured to nearby hospitals to receive medical care, and forensic experts were notified in preparation for conducting an inspection and determining the cause of the fire outbreak.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi confirmed that he is closely following the developments of the fire incident at Al-Moneera Church in Giza Governorate, describing it as "the painful incident".
The Egyptian president explained, via a post on his Facebook account, that he directed all relevant state agencies and institutions to take all necessary measures immediately to deal with this incident and its effects and provide all forms of medical care to the injured.
On the other hand, Pope Tawadros II, Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of St. Mark, extended his condolences to the families of the victims of the fire at Abu Sefein Church in Imbaba.
The church said in its statement: "Sources from the Ministry of Health said that the deaths have reached so far 41 persons, while the number of injured reached 14 persons."
The Pope indicated that he is following up with the relevant authorities on all matters related to the incident, saying: "We follow with great sorrow the painful incident that occurred this morning in the Church of the Great Martyr Mercurius Abu Sefein in the Imbaba Airport area, north of Giza.
We are in continuous contact with local leadership in the governorate, the Ministry of Health, and all officials. While we offer condolences to the families of the victims, we pray for the injured and wounded, confident that God's hand will have mercy on us all."
