The Saskatchewan New Democratic Party called for the dismissal of Education Minister Jeremy Cockrill, stating that he lied about apologizing for comments he made to a mother whose daughter had passed away.

Cockrill's comments came to light last week when Taya Thomas spoke about the difficulties faced by parents who need more support in classrooms for children with special needs.

After Thomas appeared in the legislative assembly, Cockrill committed to meeting with Thomas to discuss the issues her family faced.

According to Thomas and the New Democratic Party - when the topic of teachers' job functions in Saskatchewan came up in Thomas's conversation with Cockrill - he said to her: "What do they want me to do? Should I give up my first child?".

Cockrill admitted in the assembly last week that he made a mistake.

Cockrill said during the question period "In that meeting, Mr. Speaker, I used a phrase that was a poor choice of words on my part, 'I apologized to Ms. Thomas'."

Thomas claimed that she did not receive an apology.

She said, "He did not apologize to me, I had a friend who witnessed it, he offered me his condolences, but he made that foolish comment afterward."

According to the New Democratic Party, they also want to dismiss Cockrill for repeatedly misleading the media and the public.

New Democratic Party leader Carla Beck is expected to speak on this matter at a press conference on Monday afternoon.
