For the first time in 33 years, the Toronto Blue Jays' stadium will undergo a massive $300 million renovation that will transform the city’s stadium into a world-class soccer stadium.

Senior officials at the baseball club announced the privately funded overhaul on Thursday, which they say focuses on updating fan seating and building elite player facilities.

Mark Shapiro, president and CEO of the Jays, said in a presentation: "When fans come to the building next year, and sit in those seats and the seats below, it will be a completely different view and a significantly different scene."

The first phase of renovations will begin in the 2022-2023 season, starting at levels 100 and 200.

The team clarified that the building's exterior appearance, turf field adjustment, and roof are not within the current scope of renovation plans.

The second set of renovations will begin in the 2023-2024 season and will include premium clubs at the field level, social spaces, clubs, and player facilities.

Rogers Centre opened in 1989 as Sky Dome at a cost of nearly $570 million, or about $1 billion in today's dollars, and was the first stadium ever built with a fully retractable automated roof.
