The federal government is expected to unveil a long-awaited plan to improve access to diabetes treatment and prevention in Canada on Wednesday. Diabetes Canada has been calling for a form of national vision to address the growing disease epidemic, with Liberal MP Sonia Sidhu expected to appear at a press conference on Wednesday with Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos where they will announce, according to a press release, "a way forward in addressing diabetes in Canada."
Diabetes is a disease that prevents the body from producing or properly using insulin, which regulates blood glucose. It is a leading cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks, strokes, and lower limb amputations. According to the private member's bill, the framework must specify the training, education, and guidance that healthcare workers need to enhance treatment and prevention of diabetes, including new clinical practice guidelines. Also, the law states that the government will ensure that the Canada Revenue Agency administers the disability tax credit fairly and in a way that helps as many people with diabetes as possible. Diabetes advocates have expressed regret over the federal lack of vision on the disease for years; a federal strategy was put in place in 1999 but was absorbed into a larger strategy to address chronic diseases in 2005.
In the same context, Dr. Jean Hawks, then president of Diabetes Canada, said in a statement issued in 2019: "The longer the delay in coordinated efforts with targeted outcomes, the greater the spread of diabetes and the more Canadians will suffer its tragic complications." Since then, the prevalence of diabetes and its precursors has grown by 6.5 percent in Canada, according to statistics issued by Diabetes Canada, and the annual cost of treating the disease has risen to $30 billion. There were 5.7 million people with diabetes as of March 2022 and five million others with prediabetes—a condition that, if left untreated, can progress to type 2 diabetes.
