Determined to protect the right to abortion, the Quebec government grants $1.4 million to organizations advocating for the right to choose.
The organizations targeted for financial assistance are S.O.S Grossesse, S.O.S Grossesse Estrie, Grossesse-Secours inc, and the Quebec Birth Control Union.
The financial assistance should, among other things, raise awareness and provide neutral and honest information, based on evidence, concerning unplanned pregnancy or preventing unwanted pregnancies and supporting individuals facing unplanned pregnancy.
The organizations targeted for financial assistance said they have noticed an increase in misinformation about abortion in recent years. Moreover, part of the funding will enable painting a picture of the situation.
Jess Legault, the general coordinator of the Quebec Birth Planning Union, also emphasized that we see misinformation about abortion, and more broadly about sexual and reproductive health, as a serious threat to the health of Quebec residents.
The financial assistance will also enable improving human resources at S.O.S Grossesse, adding a contraception prescription service in Montreal, and establishing an abortion service in Quebec, according to Anthia Martino, interim general director of S.O.S Pregnancy.
Thus, better access to advocacy support resources for choice in the province is essential, as it has significant consequences for the population, where organizations must be more visible and accessible to be known and recognized by the community, as believes Pascal Hamel, general director of S.O.S Grossesse Estrie.
