The Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) confirmed that the police force has not opened any criminal investigations related to foreign interference during the recent general elections.
RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme also stated that none of the force's partners referred intelligence information to the Mounties that would justify such criminal investigations.
However, after the 2021 general election, investigations did indeed begin, including the investigation prompted by Conservative MP Michael Chong's statement about being a target of interference.
Duheme made these comments in a confidential interview conducted in February with a federal inquiry committee on foreign interference.
A general summary of the interview was presented today in the public hearings of the inquiry.
The hearings come as part of the examination of the investigation into potential foreign interference by China, India, Russia, and other countries in the recent general elections.
