Canadian Royal Police said that a father and son arrested in Richmond Hill on terrorism charges last week were "in advanced stages of planning a serious violent attack in Toronto."
During a press conference held on Wednesday morning, officials from the Canadian Royal Police stated that the Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) became aware of the threat in early July.
Ontario's Assistant Commissioner Matt Peggs told reporters, "On July 28, 2024, the Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) arrested a father and son at a hotel in Richmond Hill, and they were in advanced stages of planning a serious violent attack in Toronto."
The Canadian Royal Police moved to arrest the two men in a hotel room they were renting in Richmond Hill that night after the men obtained an axe and a knife.
Officials said the arrests were made "in a routine manner" without any excessive harm "beyond what you would expect" and without injuries.
The two men, both Canadian citizens, are residents of Toronto, and it is unclear why they were in the hotel in Richmond Hill.
Investigators are still working to determine who or what the two men were planning to attack.
The police said they are not aware of any other targets outside Toronto.
Peggs added, "I want to emphasize that there is no evidence indicating any remaining threat to the public."
The two men now face six terrorism-related charges.
Ahmed Fouad Mustafa Al-Didi and Mustafa Al-Didi appeared in court to face the charges on July 29.
In court documents, prosecutors allege that between July 1 and July 29, the two men knowingly facilitated terrorist activity and were knowingly assisting the terrorist organization ISIS in enhancing its ability to engage in terrorist activity.
Specifically, the documents allege that the two men conspired to commit murder on behalf of or direction from the ISIS terrorist organization.
The Canadian Royal Police claim this occurred while the two men were in Toronto, the York region, and other parts of Ontario.
Prosecutors also allege that around July 28, Ahmed Fouad Mustafa Al-Didi purchased an axe and Mustafa Al-Didi purchased a cleaver on behalf of or direction from the organization.
The documents do not specify exactly what the two men may have planned to do next.
Ahmed Fouad Mustafa Al-Didi was also charged with committing aggravated assault outside Canada on behalf of the organization in June 2015.
