Radio Canada International reported today, Friday, that four other ministers in the Canadian federal cabinet will not seek re-election; meaning that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will reshape his government at a time when his party leadership is increasingly fragile.

Mary-Claude Bibeau (Minister of National Revenue), Carla Qualtrough (Minister of Sports), Filomena Tassi (Minister of Economic Development for Southern Ontario), and Dan Vandal (Minister of Northern Affairs) have informed the Prime Minister that they will not run in the upcoming federal elections.

All the ministers were elected in the 2015 elections. Ministers Bibeau and Qualtrough have held ministerial positions since then. Bibeau is considering running for the mayoralty of Sherbrooke, scheduled for the fall of 2025.

Sources speaking to Radio Canada, who were not named, indicated that the four ministers will be removed from the cabinet in a cabinet reshuffle planned in the coming weeks.

The Prime Minister has not yet set a date for the reshuffle. Some of his advisors believe it is better to wait for the outcome of the American elections on November 5 before finalizing the new ministerial team.

This brings the number of ministers who have chosen not to run for re-election since the beginning of the summer to six, after the loss of two big names close to Trudeau: namely Seamus O'Regan and Pablo Rodriguez.

According to a Radio Canada count, 24 elected members of the Liberal caucus do not intend to run for re-election. This does not include the seven MPs who have resigned since the last election, including former ministers Marc Garneau, David Lametti, and Carolyn Bennett.

A major cabinet reshuffle was supposed to give the government a new lease on life in the summer of 2023 and replace ministers who are nearing retirement. Since then, the Prime Minister has not been able to gain ground against Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre in the polls.

A poll conducted by the CBC shows that the Conservatives maintain a significant lead of about 20 points over the Liberals.

The news of the ministers' departure comes at a tumultuous time for Trudeau. A group is organizing an effort to oust him by circulating a document calling for his resignation; signed by at least 20 elected representatives. This group aims to confront the Prime Minister at the parliamentary caucus meeting next week in Ottawa.
