The waiting phase is over, and U.S. President Joe Biden announced on Tuesday his candidacy for a second term, despite concerns raised by his age, eighty years.
President Joe Biden officially announced on Tuesday that he is running for re-election in 2024, asking voters to give him more time "to finish the mission" he started when he was sworn into office and to put aside their concerns about extending the race.
Biden said in a video posted on "Twitter," "I am a candidate for a second term."
The Republican Party rushed to accuse him of being "out of touch with reality."
A week ago, rumors about this candidacy were circulating in Washington.
Today, Tuesday, April 25, coincides with the fourth anniversary of Democrat Joe Biden entering the previous presidential election campaign under the slogan "For the Soul of America," in which Donald Trump was deprived of winning a second term.
If the poll expectations are correct, another competition between the two men is on the horizon. The announcement of the candidacy on this date carries strong symbolism.
- "Dignity" -
There is no campaign-related event on Biden's agenda for this day.
The president is supposed to speak in front of a union to present his vision regarding what will certainly be one of the main principles in his election campaign: how to bring "jobs in the industrial sector" back to the United States and "rebuild the middle class."
Since the beginning of the year, Biden has emphasized his desire to restore "dignity" to the "forgotten" working America that Donald Trump knew how to appeal to.
Biden believes the statistics are on his side, as American presidents generally run for re-election and are often re-elected.
But the eighty-year-old president, because of his age, challenges historical precedents. If re-elected, he will end his second term at the age of 86.
In November 2021 and February 2023, the president underwent medical checkups concluding that he is "in good health."
However, it is expected that the Democratic president, who is criticized for many slip-ups, will face increasing attacks from Republicans on his mental capacity.
Nevertheless, he shows an extraordinary ability to endure, from international crises to major reforms.
His visit to Kyiv, an unprecedented initiative accompanied by tight security measures, reminded of his role as the architect of the Western response after Russia invaded Ukraine.
Trump, DeSantis, or another figure?
Joe Biden has noted, according to polls, that his predecessor Donald Trump's (76 years old) candidacy, who has been indicted by a court in New York, no longer raises enthusiasm either.
The Democrat thus believes that if he defeats his Republican predecessor, the divisive figure, once, he can do so again by focusing on his personality as a good man and his unifying program.
Before his competitor's announcement, Donald Trump on Monday criticized the current president's performance record.
The Republican billionaire said in a statement, "You can take the worst five presidents in United States history, and they together would not cause more damage than Joe Biden has caused to our country in just a few years."
There remains a major question about what Joe Biden's chances will be if he faces a younger opponent or competitor in November 2024?
The name of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a hard-right figure aged 44, is being widely discussed. But he has not announced his candidacy yet.
This will be the fourth presidential race that Biden will run. Before being elected in 2020, he ran in the 1998 and 2008 elections, each time suffering a severe defeat. In 2015, Biden, who was then vice president and deeply affected by the death of his eldest son, withdrew from the race to succeed Barack Obama.
