The Canadian Insurance Agency reported that the wildfires that swept through Jasper are the second costliest fires in Alberta's history in terms of insured losses.

It stated that preliminary estimates indicate that more than $880 million in insured damages were due to the fire.

The 2016 wildfires in Fort McMurray, Alberta resulted in inflation-adjusted insured losses of $4.4 billion, making it the most expensive natural disaster in Canada's history.

Approximately 25,000 people were forced to flee from Jasper National Park and the town on July 22.

Residents of the town, which has a population of 5,000, were allowed to return after more than three weeks, although the area remains closed to visitors.

The fires led to the destruction of more than 350 buildings in Jasper, representing one third of its structures.
