Calgary police are investigating the death of a woman outside an elementary school in the southwest of the country this Tuesday.
At 7:30 a.m., police were called to the scene at John Costello Catholic School in Strathcona Park.
Few details are available about what happened, but officials said the victim was killed in a "targeted incident."
The police said in a statement, "An elementary school and a preschool have been closed as a precautionary measure and parents have been notified."
"No staff or students are believed to have been in danger at any time."
Police say the suspect was found dead nearby and there is no danger to the public.
Fifth-grade students at the school spoke to CTV News, saying their teacher was crying and told them "someone might have died."
"She saw blood near our front door."
The situation shocked the parents whose children attend the school.
Christy Yalbury, whose child attends John Costello, said, "I would describe Calgary and the area we live in as a very nice place." "Something like this happening near home is a bit disturbing."
In a statement to CTV News, the Calgary Catholic School District said it is praying for all those involved in the "serious incident" that occurred before school started.
"The Calgary Police Service (CPS) is present at the school today to respond to this isolated incident. To support CPS, John Costello Catholic School has been closed today, and parents/guardians have been asked to pick up their children.
"All students and staff are safe."
Police explained that they believe the incident is local in nature and that the identities of the victims will not be disclosed.
Investigators will remain at the scene near the school while talking to witnesses and gathering more information.
"This has been a very painful event that occurred in a public place. Our victim support team is engaged and is heading to the scene to speak with anyone who may be affected by this incident."
