The New York City Police Department told the Associated Press early Saturday that a man who poured a flammable substance on himself and set himself on fire outside the courthouse where former President Donald Trump is being tried has died from his injuries, and that hospital staff announced the man's death.
The man was in Collect Bond Park around 1:30 PM. Officials and witnesses said that on Friday he took out flyers promoting conspiracy theories, tossed them, then poured an accelerant on himself and ignited himself.
There were a large number of police officers nearby when this occurred. Some officers and bystanders rushed to help the man, who was taken to the hospital in critical condition at that time.
The man, whom police said had recently traveled from Florida to New York, did not breach any security checkpoints to access the park.
The park outside the courthouse had been a gathering place for protesters, journalists, and onlookers throughout Trump's trial, which began with jury selection on Monday.
During Friday, the streets and sidewalks in the area surrounding the courthouse were generally wide open, and the crowds were small and largely organized.
Authorities said they are also reviewing security protocols, including whether access to the park should be restricted. The side street that Trump enters and exits the building is closed.
New York City Police Department Deputy Commissioner Kaz Dautry said at a press conference outside the courthouse on Friday: "We may have to close this area," adding that officials will discuss the security plan soon.
