The Secretary of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, Hussein al-Sheikh, stated that the racist measures against Palestinian prisoners announced by Israeli Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir threaten to explode the situation.
Al-Sheikh added in a tweet on X, "formerly Twitter," today, Friday, that this requires an immediate reversal of these decisions and direct intervention from international human rights organizations and the International Red Cross.
For his part, a member of the political committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization and a member of the Revolutionary Council of the "Fatah" movement, Osama al-Qawasmi, said, "The extremist minister Itamar Ben Gvir's statements against the brave prisoners demonstrate the fascist racist mentality in Israel, and are a detailed translation of a bloody colonial fascist agenda against the Palestinian people and humanity as a whole."
Al-Qawasmi confirmed in a statement today that security cannot be achieved in the region through policies of killing, oppression, and racism, or by deepening occupation and apartheid, but rather by restoring the full and unqualified rights of our Palestinian people, which consist of dismantling the apartheid system and ending Israel's occupation of the State of Palestine.
For his part, the Deputy Chairman of the Palestinian Prisoners' Club, Abdullah al-Zghari, warned against Ben Gvir's decision to undermine and reduce family visits for prisoners, pointing out that this decision comes while the occupation continues to deny thousands of family members of prisoners visitation under security pretexts.
Al-Zghari added in a statement, according to the Palestinian news agency Wafa, that anticipated steps by the prisoners' movement regarding this decision are to be announced, asserting that the prisoners' movement, based on unity, is ready to resume its ongoing struggle against the policies and actions of the occupation government, emphasizing that all these measures will lead to an open confrontation with the prisoners after several rounds of battles fought by the prisoners' movement over the past period.
For his part, the head of the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs, Qadura Fares, condemned Ben Gvir's decision to restrict family visits for prisoners in the occupation's jails.
Fares stated, "The decision of the extremist Ben Gvir comes within the framework of a racist revengeful behavior aimed at harming the prisoners and their families and infringing upon their basic rights, in a manner that contradicts both Israeli laws and regulations, not just international law."
He added that "continuing to target the prisoners will be the hallmark of the next explosion against the occupation from all sides," affirming that "the factions and forces of the Palestinian people, and its institutions will be united inside and outside Israeli prisons behind the issue of prisoners, which will crush this dangerous fascist approach, which is driven by a sense of failure and frustration and an inability to fulfill the promises that were boasted about during the electoral campaign."
The extremist Israeli Minister of National Security had instructed the prison authority to restrict family visits for prisoners from the West Bank to once every two months instead of once a month, as reported by the newspaper "Yedioth Ahronoth" today, Friday. According to the Hebrew newspaper, these instructions will come into effect starting Sunday.
This decision joins another arbitrary and retaliatory measure against prisoners, announced by Ben Gvir, which involves canceling the (early release) of sick and elderly prisoners whose sentences are nearing completion, which the prison authority uses to alleviate overcrowding in prisons.
Reducing prisoner visits is the latest decision in a series of measures taken by Ben Gvir to tighten restrictions on Palestinian prisoners in the occupation's jails since he took office at the beginning of this year, including closing bakeries in some prisons, reducing shower time, and pushing towards enacting a law in the "Knesset" that allows for the execution of Palestinian prisoners.
