Relief organizations announced today, Monday, that heavy rains and floods caused the death of at least 30 people, and the displacement of tens of thousands in Kenya and Somalia after 4 years of drought.

The federal government in Somalia declared a state of emergency, after severe weather conditions caused the death of at least 14 people, and the destruction of homes, roads, and bridges.

Emergency and rescue workers are also trying to reach about 2,400 people trapped by floodwaters in the Luuq area of Jubaland state in southern Somalia.

In neighboring Kenya, the Kenyan Red Cross said the death toll has risen to 15 since the heavy rains began on Friday, while the coastal city of Mombasa and the Mandera and Wajir counties in the northeast of the country were the most affected.

The Kenyan Red Cross also reported that since Sunday, floods have destroyed 241 acres of farmland and caused the death of 1,067 heads of livestock.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs warned of a high risk of floods along the Juba and Shabelle rivers and called for the evacuation of the entire Juba area.

The heavy rains in Somalia come after four consecutive years of drought that pushed the country to the brink of famine.
